The Cafete is an initiative by students for the Weinberg campus.
Status: June 2022 Together we have founded the non-profit organisation Cafete e.V. As an association, we run the Cafete. We want to use it to create a meeting place and a place to socialise. And as we all know, the best way to do that is with a bite to eat and a drink. As we also know that students don't have a lot of money, we endeavour to offer high-quality food (organic and fair) at reasonable donation prices. We want to be a place where you can meet and / or work, of course you don't have to drink coffee or eat sandwiches from us, you can also bring your own things and just be there!
In the middle of the campus, we have slowly developed into a contact point for all sorts of things, from information on course changes and lost keys to conjuring up glasses of champagne for spontaneous drop-off parties. We can't do everything, but there is often someone who knows who can really help. We are also happy to receive planned enquiries, ideas and suggestions, just send us an email (see Contact). Together we want to make studying and working on campus more enjoyable.
We try to act as ecologically, sustainably and regionally as possible. We want to support the Hildesheim retail trade, which is why we buy most of our food from Knolle and Bäckerei Safft. Since the summer semester 2018, almost all animal products have come from organic farming. Since the winter semester 2021, we have been sourcing our coffee from dreielf, a small artisan roastery in the Moritzberg district. The coffee beans for the espresso come from Rainer Böhme's Finca Fulda in Mexico and the COCARIVE cooperative in Brazil. We get our drinks from Micha in the living room. Since the 2019 winter semester, we have been cooperating with Café myKoffje, which has enabled us to occasionally offer hot soup without having a kitchen to cook it ourselves.
We have purchased a fire-powered pizza oven to enhance various events on the Weinberg campus. The oven has its regular place at the café, but was deliberately designed so that it can be moved around the campus by forklift truck. This means that the pizza oven can be used for events organised by the student council and the faculty in addition to the café itself. At the same time, we are always open to student cooperation, so that all other faculties in Hildesheim and student organisations can also use the cafeteria as a venue and therefore also the pizza oven for events.
Cafete conquers the campus
As an association, we not only want to provide everyone with good coffee and snacks, but also promote and enrich life on campus in general.
In spring 2018, we declared the dry, flattened lawns around the terrace a café garden/campus garden. A spontaneous action with lots of sunflowers and a simple flower seed mixture has now become a permanent planting. Firstly with insect-friendly flowers and secondly with a herb and vegetable corner. The herbs are for the café, but can also be used by everyone else. With the start of the corona pandemic, we have been closed since spring 2020. A café team has nevertheless continued to look after the garden areas. In this way, we were at least able to make everyone who is still working on campus and the many walkers happy.
Since spring 2019, a team of university and café members has been developing a new shade concept for the terrace. The result is a modular tubular steel construction. This can be fitted with awnings. In addition, two vines were planted in spring 2020 to provide long-term shade.
We were able to conquer the grounds around the former pathology centre for two summers. And create a retreat there with hammocks. Unfortunately, all the trees have now been felled and the retreat has become a wasteland...
